Hailsham

Hailsham is one of the first places made in respect to the clones. Here the clones, or students, can live as healthy or as 'normal' of a life as possible; without being hurt from the outside world, or racism. The students in Hailsham have humans called Gaurdians who look after them. Though these Guardians care for the students, and have done everything they can to give them a better life, they are still disgusted of the clones and fear them a great deal. '"Is she afraid of you? We're all afraid of you. I myself had to fight back my dread of you almost everyday I was at Hailsham. There were times I’d look down at you all from my study window and I’d feel such revulsion..." She stopped, then something in her eyes flashed again. "But I was determined not to let such feelings stop me from doing what was right"' (Ishiguro 169). Although Hailsham was made for a good cause, it had some flaws. All the students in Hailsham had some idea about what lay ahead in their future, though not one Guardian bluntly told them that they would be donating parts of their body to sick humans. Also, none of the students were allowed to see the outside world until they turned thirteen, which was not the wisest decision because once they did see the outside world for the first time, they might be confused and unable to take care of themselves without a guardian for support.

I read this book and found it interesting.....when i read your blog (to me) you sounded sort of fustrated and disturbed by the "humans" in this book......i saw and feel the same as you do but i think it was because the whole plan and situation had been so hard and they knew that even though they were tryiing to make change, they were still working with clones.....i defiantly do see whe ere prejudice because even though the humans were trying to help it seemed as if they were repulsed or something by the clones......I felt so bad for Tommy and Kathy when the went to Madame to get the defferal because this was what they had planne and put so much thiought into and then right then and there is when they found out the horrible truth.....and also to tell you the truth, i do not thing that there is a "Normal" because truthfully, until miss Emily, told them about the 'life' at Halisham, i did not even know that they were clones!

You would think that the humans might show a little respect to the clones because they are helping mankind and science in numerous ways. But I guess if you do think about it, and if we did have clones in our society, we too might feel a little repulsed because these clones had all the characteristics of humans, but they still weren't human. So I see were the humans in this novel base their feelings towards the clones, but I still think the clones should be respected more.

Hey Tala, I didn't read the same book as you did so when I read your posts I had no clue what you were talking about. You may want an introduction or short summary of what happens in the novel and who the characters are. Don't worry almost evrybody has does this.
